“I love my SurfacePro 3: it does everything I need it to and it’s great for meetings because it’s lightweight. The variety of kit we use is also great for testing on a range of different devices.”

I’m a member of the growing army of Dell XPS15 users in comparethemarket.com’s tech team. I’ve always used a Windows machine so it’s what I’m used to; it’s great to have the choice rather than just using whatever the company decides."

Choose your software

Ruby

Ruby is a dynamic, expressive and simple language that we use internally for writing tools, utilities and build scripts.

We find using gems such as Rake coupled with Albacore help create more expressive build files that are much easier to understand than the endless pages of XML most developers are familiar with.

“Before joining I didn’t realise just how tech-focused the brand is, but there’s so much going on: new ideas, new ways of working – it really is a tech hub.” Michael, Senior Software Engineer

Git

We’re big fans of Git it’s a great free tool and the fact that it’s cloud-based means we have access to our code from anywhere, which supports our flexible working.

We used to use TFS online, and it’s still around in some areas, but Git’s our preferred choice, as it’s agnostic to technology and so gives us more flexibility to use things such as TeamCity, Jenkins and Go, or others such as Octopus Deploy and Docker, rather than being tied to Microsoft services.

Microsoft .NET

It’s our meat and potatoes! The majority of our development is back-end, so we use C# for a lot of our work. We’re building different micro-services in .NET for carrying out different tasks.

Business logic lives within these back-end services and our various different front-ends, mobile apps and websites on different devices all talk to those services. For example, the quote engine is all written on multi-threaded .NET systems which means it connects with hundreds of different partners for price requests on thousands of quotes each day.

JavaScript

JavaScript is fundamental to our front- and back-end architecture across comparethemarket.com, and so has a real impact on the experience we deliver to the customer.

In the back-end we use Node.js to deliver high-performing and high-scaling applications to customers. In the front-end we are using AngularJS, KnockoutJS, Grunt and Gulp, among other frameworks and tools, to deliver rich interfaces and enhance the customer experience.

HTML and CSS

This is where the magic happens! We’re continually exploring and using the latest HTML and CSS techniques and features to deliver high-performing web and mobile experiences.

We use HTML and CSS to help us build maintainable and responsive web applications throughout all our projects.

Mobile

Millions of our customers use us on their mobiles, and that means writing native and hybrid mobile applications that will deliver a rich experience native to their phone. It’s all about exploring how we can deliver unique customer experiences using Java, Swift, Objective-C and the Ionic framework.

We use Cordova and Ionic frameworks to develop our hybrid applications. These frameworks allow us to build applications that run in a different number of devices using a single code base.

We use Calabash for end-to-end testing, coupled with Xamarin Test Cloud allowing us to automatically test the applications across a number of different devices.

In the near future, we are planning to use Xamarin tools with C# to have the same cross-platform capabilities in a native way. This will allow us to build faster applications with a native look and feel, with full access to the underlying platform’s features.

Create your space

Great kit and the latest tech are just one part of the story. Really it's about creating a work environment where people can shine.

"For me, the encouragement to be the best you can be is the best part of the role. And I'm working with new tech all the time - things I wouldn't find elsewhere."
Mo, Lead Test Engineer

"Our teamwork and the kit we get means being able to support our product from anywhere. We can be proactive and monitor much more quickly. We don't get bogged down in documentation - the way we work is very visual, and we use everything from Post-it notes to the latest software!"
Rob, Project Manager

"I've been able to try lots of new things and be trained on different aspects, such as gaining the experience I wanted in new strains of agile."
Paul, Business Analyst
